Africa: The Great Continent
Africa is the second largest continent both in population and landmass (after Asia). It has 54 sovereign countries spread across various regions. The number of countries in Africa is the highest of any known continent in the world.
Africa is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, to the northeast is Isthmus of Suez and the Red Sea, southeast is the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

African nations have a corporate body known as African Union, AU with the headquarters in Addis Ababa and other regional and economic organisations which include:

- East African Community;
- Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD);
- Common Market for Eastern and Southern (COMESA);
- Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS); and

Africa has a population of 1.216 billion according to the figures published in 2016 and it covers about 16% of the population of the world.
Africa covers about 30.37 km^2 including adjacent islands which are about 6% of the Earth’s surface area and 20% of its land area.
Africa has the fifth largest forested area (6, 500, 000 sq km) in the world.
The largest city in Africa is Lagos. Others include: Cairo, Kinshahsa, Johannesburg, Abuja, Khartoum, Dar es Salaam, Alexandria, Abidjan, Algiers, Kano, Casablanca, Ibadan, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Accra, etc.
There are about 1250-3000 native languages in Africa.
The largest country in Africa by landmass is Algeria while Nigeria is the largest by population.
It is widely accepted that Africa is the place of origin for human beings, particular Eastern Africa.
